Swiss RAG is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) delivered as a fully sovereign, Swiss-hosted service. The language models, embeddings, vector store, knowledge graph, document archive, backups and logs all run inside Switzerland — under Swiss law, operated by providers that no foreign authority can compel. SovraRAG is a Swiss RAG platform built exactly this way.
What is Swiss RAG?
Retrieval-augmented generation grounds an AI's answers in your own documents: the system retrieves the relevant passages from your corpus and cites them, instead of relying on a model's generic training data. Swiss RAG adds one non-negotiable constraint for regulated Swiss organisations — the complete pipeline stays within Swiss jurisdiction. Nothing about the question, the documents, the embeddings or the answer is ever processed by a service that a foreign government could reach.
That is different from “RAG hosted in a Swiss cloud region”. A server in Zurich operated by a US-incorporated provider is still within reach of the US CLOUD Act. A genuine Swiss RAG platform requires both Swiss infrastructure and Swiss-controlled operators across every step of the data path.
Why a Swiss RAG platform matters
For banks, insurers, law firms, hospitals, pharma companies and public administrations, the corpus a RAG system indexes is exactly the material that must not leave Swiss jurisdiction: client dossiers, case files, patient records, research, contracts. Sending that content — or even its embeddings — to a US cloud AI is a cross-border disclosure under the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (nFADP / nDSG / nLPD) and a problem under banking secrecy, professional secrecy (Art. 321 StGB) and FINMA outsourcing expectations. A Swiss RAG platform removes the question by keeping everything in Switzerland.
- Data sovereignty. Inference and storage under Swiss law, beyond the reach of foreign legal process.
- nFADP / nDSG / nLPD alignment. No cross-border disclosure; data encrypted per tenant before storage; per-document access control; configurable retention; full audit and query logs.
- FINMA-ready. Swiss-only data path, operator-blind encryption and a complete audit trail fit outsourcing and data-handling circulars.
- Professional secrecy. Suitable for lawyers, notaries and doctors bound by Art. 321 StGB.
Swiss RAG vs. generic cloud RAG
| Generic cloud RAG | Swiss RAG (SovraRAG) | |
|---|---|---|
| AI inference & embeddings | US hyperscaler / US model API | Swiss AI cloud, in Switzerland |
| Storage & backups | Often outside CH; unclear region | Geneva datacenter, Swiss bucket |
| Legal control | US CLOUD Act exposure | Swiss jurisdiction only |
| Encryption | Provider-managed, provider-readable | Operator-blind, per-tenant AES-256-GCM |
| nDSG / FINMA fit | Requires transfer safeguards | No cross-border disclosure |
How SovraRAG implements Swiss RAG
SovraRAG runs the whole retrieval-augmented generation stack on Swiss infrastructure. Language models and multilingual embeddings are served from a Swiss AI cloud; compute and object storage run in a Geneva datacenter; and every document is encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a key unique to your organisation before it touches storage, so the operator cannot read your content.
- Hybrid GraphRAG retrieval — semantic and keyword search combined with a knowledge graph of entities and relations, for multi-hop questions across documents.
- Bounded agentic reasoning — complex questions are researched step by step with strict bounds, full fallback and audit logging.
- Multilingual — German, French, Italian and English, with cross-lingual ask and retrieve.
- Document intelligence — PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, text and scanned images (OCR), with document structure preserved.

Who uses Swiss RAG
Swiss RAG is built for organisations whose knowledge is also their liability if it leaks across borders: banks and wealth managers, pharma and life sciences, legal and fiduciary firms, insurers, hospitals, manufacturers, public administrations and universities. Any team that needs cited answers over a private corpus — without that corpus ever leaving Switzerland — is a Swiss RAG user.
SovraRAG is a Swiss company based in Geneva. It is not affiliated with Sovra (sovra.io), a Latin American digital-identity provider whose platform includes a module of the same name; see Sovra RAG for the distinction.
